Fifties Thriller with Strong Agatha Christie Echoes

Set on a remote island in the late Fifties, DEATH OF A LOVED ONE has strong echoes of Agatha Christie: at one point a character likens the situation to that of TEN LITTLE INDIANS.

So what exactly did I miss? Lil (Ida Engvoll) bears more than a passing resemblance to Marilyn Monroe; she adopts a more liberal approach to her relationships. And yes, someday I'll watch "Crimes of Passion: Death of a Loved One" again.

Crimes of Passion: Death of a Loved One

Puck Ekstedt, doctoral student in literature, is invited by her supervisor Rutger to spend Midsummer with him and his wife at their summer house on an isolated island.

I so enjoyed the characters, the dialogue (I had forgotten how funny Lang could be), the hide-and-seek all over the isolated island where the characters, all friends, are spending a week (nobody ever seemed to be getting any sleep ;)), and, of course, the chief detective himself, Christer Wijk, on whom I had a bit of a literary crush in my teens.

The main character Puck, played by Tuva Novotny, is invited to celebrate midsummer on a remote island. Sommarnatten är förrädiskt vacker och erotiska spänningar mellan gästerna uppstår. :)

Upon re-reading Lang's very first novel, I am amazed by how much I still like it. Puck learns that Einar will also be present at the cottage.

A group of people are isolated on the island, with no means of communication with the mainland except by boat - and the boat has been put out of action.
