Outdoor Begonia Care
In USDA zones 10–11, begonias can grow outdoors year-round.
- More potting mix is added around the plant, and patted down.
Rhizome grows upright. Use a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer every 2–4 weeks.
- A sprinkling of Osmocote fertilizer mixed into the potting mix after it’s in the pot will provide a good supply of nutrients to the plant for a few months. Gets its name from the leaf colors which change with the seasons or light conditions and can be any shade from aqua marine to raw umber or even ochre with dark veining and spots.
Leaves are deeply lobed but not quite star-shaped, more rounded. A balanced fertilizer with equal parts nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) supports both healthy foliage and blooming.
You can use a liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength every two to four weeks. The exact frequency depends on your indoor temperature, humidity, pot size, and plant type.
Begonias prefer a slightly moist soil, but they will not survive in soggy soil. A head house is the work center of any greenhouse operation.
- Any new plants or plants that need repotting are placed on a counter in the head house. Vigorous and healthy, at least doubled in size. It is specifically designated for potting, transplanting and other plant care tasks.
Then, dig up the tubers, brush off soil, and store them in a cool, dry, dark location such as a basement or garage. They are hardy, adaptable, and tolerate a range of indoor and outdoor conditions. It has the added bonus of profuse medium pink flowers in spring. Markings are very unusual and distinct.
